KOLLING INSTITUTE OF MEDICAL
RESEARCH
Established in
1920 under the Royal North Shore Hospital of Sydney Act
Renamed the Kolling Institute of Medical Research in
1931 after a prominent businessman and engineer, Mr
Charles Kolling, following a generous donation from his wife Mrs
Eva Kolling.

Currently the largest and
most up-to-date structure housing research and education facilities on a
hospital site anywhere in Australia.
Research laboratories: includes 5
floors with over 600 metres of bench space for general laboratory
procedures, separate laboratories housing specialised equipment and
office accommodation for researchers and support staff.
Tumour Bank: for the Breast,
Gynaecological, Upper Gastrointestinal and Neuroendocrine Banks from
Royal North Shore and nearby hospitals. We are also a collection site
for the NSW Breast Cancer Tissue Bank. The blood and tumour specimens
housed in these banks are invaluable in the facilitation of
translational research programs.
Pathology Museum: a collection of 350 specimens
which have all been fully catalogued to provide a powerful resource for
medical students, health professionals and for community education.
Education facilities: includes
Douglas Piper Library, 202 seat auditorium, 68 seat lecture theatre, 30
seat seminar room, 11 small group tutorial rooms for 10 people each,
computer learning centre with training desks for 10 workstations, etc.
Simulation Centre: a 90 sqm training lab,
with teaching table monitored by closed-circuit video, and 10
laparoscopic towers which provides training and education in clinical
skills and team factors using innovative techniques.

appointments as Doctors/Surgeons/Professors with local public and
private hospitals such as Royal North Shore Hospital and North Shore
Private Hospital, and Universities such as the University of Sydney.
